Your bags? Packed! Your level of excitement? Off the charts! Your thirst for adventure? Boundless! So you hop on the plane and head for the sun. You lean back, close your eyes and could swear you already smell the salty Caribbean breeze. When you open them again, Mexico appears beneath you, then – bang – you've landed. And thanks to the time difference, it's still the same day it was when you left – wild, isn't it? Now it's time to pick up your hire car and head to your first stop. Welcome to Cancún! Your hotel is just a stone's throw away, so you make your way there, settle in, kick back, grab a nice cold drink and raise a toast to your trip before the day ends and tomorrow's adventures begin!
Paradise is calling! So you hit the road early and zoom off to the port of Chiquilá, where you leave your trusty ride in the car park (parking fees payable yourself). 'All aboard!' – on the ferry (payable on site), you let the fresh sea breeze tousle your hair, and before long, Isla Holbox appears on the horizon. Then once you've docked, it's just a short walk to your dreamy beachside hotel. Time for Caribbean vibes, chillin' and snow-white shores with a slight hippie vibe. By the way, there aren't any paved roads on this island, so you won't find any cars here – it's all just sand! And the fishing village of the same name, the only inhabited place on the island, is the first must-see. The alleyways of downtown Holbox aren't just sandy, they're colourful too! Every house shines in a different brilliant colour, and the facades are true street art masterpieces. Set off with your camera and treat yourself to a delicious smoothie before watching the magical sunset on the beach. Man, is Holbox beautiful!
One thing you have to do on Holbox: chill out in one of the famous hammocks! You'll find hammocks on almost every beach, fastened between the tall palm trees – perfect for doing nothing! The most famous – and most Instagrammable – can be found in the water on the expansive Playa Holbox. Doing nothing isn't your thing? Then hire a bike and explore the island (optional, payable onsite) or hike to Punta Mosquito, where between April and October, you might even be lucky enough to spot some flamingos. You can reach the beach via the seemingly endless Las Nubes sandbank, which rises out of the turquoise-blue sea at low tide. So be sure to keep an eye on the water's ebb and flow!
If Holbox hasn't completely stolen your heart yet, it's high time you visited the small food market in the city centre – fresh fish, exotic fruit, vegetables and loads of avocados. Browse what's on offer and sample your way through the island's culinary delights! A smoothie here, incredibly good tacos there and you’ll fall hopelessly in love with Holbox; after all, the way to the heart is through the stomach. And then it's time to hit the beach! Put on your sunglasses, make your way to the waves and put your feet in the sand as you let the sun shine on your belly and treat yourself to the occasional dip in the sea.
