Your veins are coursing with excitement! Your suitcase has long been packed, and now you're wheeling it through the airport – your portal to the next adventure! Before you know it, the sounds of your rolling suitcase have been replaced with the whooshing of engines as your plane lifts off into the night sky at full speed. Countless stars twinkle in the heavens with the promise of a thrilling time ahead. You lean back, close your eyes and dream of the adventures ahead one last time before they finally come true!
It's finally time! Off you go to long-awaited Laos! Did you know that Laos (or Lane Xang) means 'the land of a million elephants'? A promising name that only increases your excitement about this incredible insider travel tip. Just a short time later, you've made it and find yourself peering out across a dazzling landscape of green mountains, lazy rivers and endless rice fields.
Having arrived at your hotel, you slip into your most comfortable shoes and look around for a vehicle (optional, payable on site). Your first destination: the village of Ban Pha Tang. Once there, you make the daring decision to cross the narrow wooden footbridge over the river and stop in the middle to soak up the incredible view. A landscape of dense greenery and mighty karst formations stretches out before you and you let out an awestruck ‘Wow!’ Further along the river, you come across Wat Pho Karm Chai Mong Col, a colourful temple that boasts the best garden view of all.
What does your perfect Laotian morning look like? How about a coffee and an episode of Friends on a comfy lounger? That's exactly what you find in one of the many backpacker bars in Vang Vieng – total '90s deep dive. But you don't stay long, as your curiosity about the next adventure is just too great! You grab a motorbike (optional, payable on site) and follow the rushing torrents to the Kaeng Nyui Waterfall. Then you make your way through the jungle on foot along small ponds and over lovely wooden bridges until you find yourself standing in front of the thundering waterfall. Swathes of foaming water dance through the air like lights and make you pause in awe. Want to top that? Stop at Nam Xay on the way back. A hiking trail leads up the limestone karst to the summit, where an old motorbike and a breathtaking view await you along with a Laotian flag. Ready to announce your new favourite country to the world?
Laos already has you shook, but guess what? There's more to come! Grab a bike (easily hireable on site) and check out what else awaits you around Vang Vieng. Pedal off, cross the amber-coloured Nam Song River and ride through karst landscapes so green and wild you'll hardly be able to believe your eyes. If you want an overview of the area, park your bike and head up to the Pha Ngern Viewpoint. The city, nature, vast expanses – once there, you'll have a view that's truly top tier. Vang Vieng is a real outdoor paradise with loads to offer, so if you've still got some energy left in the tank, why not do some ziplining, kayaking or rock climbing or even go for a hot air balloon ride? It's all ready and waiting to give you that next rush of adrenaline!
